Traditional acupuncture is a safe and effective healthcare system based upon more than 2,000 years of practice and research.  It is practiced throughout the world both as a primary and adjunctive treatment for a wide variety of conditions. It views pain, illness and dysfunction as signs that the body is out of balance. The overall aim of a treatment is to find and restore the root cause of the imbalance in order to improve and restore the health of the patient. Traditional Chinese medicine postulates that there is a circulation of vital energy called qi (chi), around the body, that flows along specific lines or channels. Traditional acupuncturists believe that the underlying principle of a treatment is that illness and pain occur when the body’s qi  cannot flow freely.  There can be many reasons for this, emotional and physical stress, poor nutrition, infection or injury are among the most common.  The objective of a treatment is to find and restore the root cause of this imbalance.By inserting ultra-fine sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, a traditional acupuncturist seeks to address the root cause of a condition, re-establish the free flow of qi and therefore restore balance by triggering the body’s natural healing response. Acupuncturists use subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined over centuries. The focus is on the individual, not their illness, and all the symptoms are viewed in relation to each other.  Each patient is treated as an individual; two people with the same diagnosis may well receive different acupuncture treatments. What makes this holistic system so unique and suited to modern life is that the physical, emotional and mental aspects of the person are viewed as interdependent.  Consequently, a treatment for a physical condition may have a positive affect on the emotional and mental nature of the person.
